Okatse canyon in Georgia
21 March, 2019
Sure Okatse Canyon is an unknown to most world travelers. However in www.senderismoeuropa.com we wanted to mention an article dedicated to this great place because it seems a tourist attraction of great interest because it perfectly combines sport, Adventure and Nature, and it is easy to go to any traveler.
We explain what it is: Okatse Canyon is a gorge located near the village of Gordi (Georgia), a few 42 kilometers from the city of Kutaisi, city that certainly has direct flights to Spain… It is a canyon about 16 km length, 50 meters wide and up 70 meters deep. At the bottom of the ravine flows the river of the same name, Okatse river, turquoise water. Okatse Canyon Natural Monument is granted by the State of Georgia for its ecological and landscape value.
But what makes this place a destination worth visiting is the gateway recently built on one of the slopes of the ravine has a length of 780 meters offering stunning views of the ever green and wooded landscape of the canyon because it is suspended 50 meters above the bottom of the ravine through which passes the river Okatse. A stroll through this gateway will take us and give us adrenaline certainly unforgettable anecdotes of this trip.
The gateway also has up and down stairs with the end of travel a spectacular protruding platform is reached 50 meters above the abyss of the ravine. It is the ideal place to take photographs or selfies on the brink place…
In Europe there are other buildings of this type, increasingly frequent, but none has the point of exoticism and exclusivity provided by the Canyon Okatse, here you will not have to queue for hours to enter or request access weeks in advance, It is a modern facility but is not yet overcrowded by little known yet.
But you can not just walk the catwalk, we recommend also make full hiking route that crosses the forest of this Nature Reserve, en total 2-3 hour round trip hike. Another option for those who do not want to walk so take a taxi 4×4 in the visitor center of the Natural Reserve where you buy the entrance (about 5 €) and thus save a 45 minute climb and as many downhill. In that case the SUV (the price is negotiated with the driver but the price is usually around 10 €, in total up and down) leaves you at the entrance to the catwalk.
A gateway is accessible from April to November, daily except Mondays, Hours are 10:00 a 17:00 hours. For security reasons access snow days or much rain is restricted. For safety reasons children can not access high retail 1,20 meters.
In our hiking trip in Georgia of course we include a visit to this place.
After the walk down the barrel of Okatse we also recommend visiting the waterfall Kinchkha, an impressive waterfall with a drop of water 70 meters. It is 5 Canyon kilometers Okatse, so a taxi can take us there for a 15 €. Besides watching closely this great waterfall you can make a simple hiking trail through the surrounding forest and small river canyons of Okatse.
