Travel Ornithology and Birding in Spring Bulgaria.

Like birding?, Did you think to see Pelicans released or rare oriental spices you had to travel to distant countries of Asia?, nothing further away from reality, You can observe within Europe only 3 hour flight from Spain with the help of our local experts from Bulgaria.
This trip is especially designed for amateur bird watching Spanish because it focuses on those species that can not be seen in the Iberian Peninsula. Are species whose presence in Europe is limited to the southeast corner of Europe where it is Bulgaria. To name a few: Eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) , Black hawk (Accipiter brevipes), Pallid harrier (Circus macrourus), Kestrel patirrojo (Falco vespertinus) and Mouser moro (Buteo rufinus), Shrike nubica (Lanius nubicus), Great Zarcero (Hippolais olivetorum) and Eastern Warbler (Phylloscopus orientalis), Western rock climber (Sitta Neumayer), Chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), Escribano cabezinegro (Emberiza melanocephala), Dalmatian Pelicans and White, Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmeus), Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), Stint falcinelo(Limicola falcinellus) and Terek Sandpipers (Xenu cinereus), Falaropo picofino (Phalaropus lobatus), Flycatcher semicollarino (Ficedula semitorquata), Papamoscas paipirojo (Small eater), Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola), Pious Collalba (Oenanthe pleschanka), Carbonero dreary (Poecile lugubris) and Isabel Collaba (Oenanthe isabellina).
We may see more of 150 species on our journey though the itinerary below reflect only we mentioned some of the species that can not be seen in Spain, or that they are considered rarities, the irregular migrants and scarce.
There will only be 2 long distances while traveling and hiking are easy to moderate walks. We will have enough time in nature to find our target and we will spend most of the day doing that that is what we like, search and birdwatching. However besides birds, as it will be Spring, we see good specimens of butterflies and even the common Jackal (Canis aureus) .

Day 1: Arrival in the capital, Sofia, airport pickup and driving times to the East Rhodope Mountains, It is a journey of a 4,5 hours with option of stopping en route to see some birds. We will stay the following 2 nights in the town of Krumovgrad in hotel 3***.
Day 2 : We spend the day at the nearby valley, a 15 minutes from the hotel. It is a quiet and bucolic valley rich in birds and other wildlife. Here we look for the black hawk (Accipiter brevipes), Shrike nubica (Lanius nubicus) , Great Zarcero (Hippolais olivetorum), Eastern Warbler (Phylloscopus orientalis), Western rock climber (Sitta Neumayer), Chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), Alcaudón chico (Lanius minor), Escribano cabecinegro (Emberiza melanocephala) and many others. We may also find butterflies species Zerynthia polyxena , Allancastria cerisy and other.
Day 3 : Today we continue on the road to the east and in a few hours reach the gentle hills of Sakar, here we look for the Eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca), Aguila pomerana (Clanga pomarina), Moor Buzzard nominal subspecies (Buteo rufinus), Syrian Pico (Dendrocopos syriacus), Eastern Orphean Warbler (Sylvia crassirostris), Zarcero icterino (Hippolais icterina) and new large Zarcero (Hippolais olivetorum) , and the Shrike nubica (Lanius nubicus) and chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar). Hotel accommodation 3*** near the town of Topolovgrad.
Days 4 Y 5 : We spend the morning in the area near the hotel looking for the species that we have passed the previous day, then path 2 hours until the Black Sea coast in order to visit the wetlands of the city of Burgas, 4 Great Lakes partly saline cold water, plus another few smaller lagoon. Here we search for both white and Dalmatian pelicans, Pygmy Cormorant, Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) , and some late Somormujo cuellirojo (Podiceps grisegena) , among raptors: European Pigargo (Haliaeetus albicilla) and the lone Pallid harrier (Circus macrourus) , and some more common as the common buzzard (Steppe buzzard) , Kestrel patirrojo (Falco vespertinus) and Lesser Spotted Eagle (Clanga pomarina). There will be large numbers of shorebirds and in particular find the Sandpiper Falcinelo, the Terek Sandpipers (Xenu cinereus) y Archibebe up (Tringa stagnatilis) y of Falaropo picofino (Phalaropus lobatus), Canastera possibly alinegra (Glareola nordmanni) and many other. Fumarel aliblanco (Chlidonias leucopterus) and Caspian Gull be flying around while watching the papirrojo Flycatcher (Small eater) y papamoscas collar (Ficedula albicollis) and possibly sallow Lavandera (Motacilla citreola) and red-throated Pipit (Anthus cervinus).Also we find a few typical forest species such as Bulgaria semicollarino Flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata). Day 6 : The day we visited the Cape Emine to an hour's drive north. There will seek the pious Collalba (Oenanthe pleschanka), the gloomy Carbonero (Poecile lugubris) carmine and possibly Bullfinch (Carpodacus erythrinus). Many species of our check list of the previous days are also found here and spend part of the time in the observation to the Sea. In the afternoon we drive back to Sofia for a few 4 hours, stopping halfway to see some species. Overnight in the town of Gabarevo in a beautiful traditional hotel 2**.
Day 7 : In this area near the hotel look for the gray-headed woodpecker (Pico aging) , Collalba isabel (Oenanthe isabellina) , Hawk Warbler (Sylvia nisoria) and Carricero políglota (Marsh Warbler) and many others. In the afternoon we can look for the elusive partridge ( Alectoris), For that we need to perform a moderate hike of about 3 km by a wide dirt road. Other species may be the Mouser moro ( Buteo rufinus ) and we have a small chance to see the Pico dorsiblanco (Dendrocopos leucotos, spp. liffordi) . When we are ready, an hour away by road leads to the village of Mirkovo where we stay in a family hotel 2**. Good dinner and sleep early withdrawal for early the next day back to Sofia.
Day 8 : Get to the airport in Sofia will take 1 Time travel, to take the flight back to Spain
Note: This is a birding trip in which if desired photograph should carry at least lenses 300 mm and a stable tripod, the bean bags can be borrowed upon request in advance. In lakes, a wide angle, and a zoom of 70-200 It would be very useful. We also make specific trips for nature photographers, contact us.
