Ornithology and Bird Watching in Bulgaria.

Duration: 8 days to choose between 1 of Julio and the 20 of August.

A trip with an impressive checklist of 263 species in only 8 days, thanks to the variety of ecosystems found in Bulgaria and with the help of our local ornithological guides. Therefore traveling to Bulgaria is the best option to see rare species and this paradise is only 3,5 flight hours from Spain.

There will only be 2 long road trips during the trip and the walks will be easy with moderate walks. We will have enough time in the wild to search for our target species and we will spend most of the day doing what we like., search and observe birds. However in addition to the birds, since it will be summer, we can see good specimens of butterflies and even the common jackal (Canis aureus) .

 

About the birds that can be seen, below we have only mentioned some of the species that cannot be seen in Spain. To name a few: Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), Black hawk (Accipiter brevipes), Moorish buzzard (Buteo rufinus); Shrike (Lanius nubicus), Sitta neumayer, Partridge sucking (Alectoris chukar), Black-headed bunting (Emberiza melanocephala), Frowning and White Pelicans, Pygmy cormorant (Microcarbo pygmeus), Papamoscas semicollarino (Ficedula semitorquata), Papyrus flycatcher (small eater), Pious collalba (Oenanthe pleschanka), Gloomy chickadee (Poecile lugubris) and Collaba isabel (Oenanthe isabellina) and many others.

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1 - Pick up at Sofia airport and transfer by road to the Eastern Rhodopes Mountain, where during 2 nights we will stay in the small town of Krumovgrad. The road transport takes a few 4,5 hours but you can make several stops en route to watch birds. Accommodation and dinner in Krumovgrad .

Day 2 - We will spend the day in the valley near Krumovgrad at 15 minutes from the hotel. This valley has a quiet and bucolic landscape rich in birds and other nature. Here we will look for the black Gavilan, Shrike, Pale Zarcero, Big wattle, Eastern mosquito net, Sitta neumayer, Partridge sucking, Lesser Shrike, Black-headed bunting and many others.

Day 3 - We continue by road towards the East and in a couple of hours we reach the mountain of Sakar. There we will look for the Imperial Eagle, Aguila pomerana, Moorish buzzard, Syrian Peak, Curruca mirlona, Zarcero icterino, again the Great Zarcero as well as the Shrike and the Chucar Partridge. Accommodation in Topolovgrad.

Days 4 and 5 - We will spend the morning sighting in this area looking for species that could not be seen the day before, then transfer to the Black Sea coast (nail 2 hours) to get to the Burgas Wetlands, What are they 4 large lakes plus many smaller ones. In them we will look for the frowning pelican and white pelican, Pygmy cormorant, Cinnamon jar and Pomeranian Eagle. On these dates there is an abundance of waders and we will particularly look for the Falcinelo Correlimos, Sandpipers of the Terek and Archibebe Fino, also the picofino phalarope, possibly the Alinegra Canastera and many others.

Flying around us will be found the White-winged Fumarel and the Caspian Gull, while the Passerines include the Red-headed Flycatcher and Collared Flycatcher., and possibly the Sallow Wagtail and Red-throated Pipit. We will also look inside some small forests for another star species from Bulgaria, the cozy flycatcher.

Day 6 - Today we visit the nearby Cape Emine, one hour north. Here we look for the Collalba pía, Dingy Chickadee and possibly the Crimson Bullfinch. Many of the species mentioned the day before are also in this area and we will spend some time making sightings towards the Black Sea from the coast. In the afternoon we return by road to the interior of the country, making stops along the way to spot some species and finally spending the night in the town of Gabarevo.

Day 7 - In the vicinity of the hotel we will look for the Pito cano, Collalba isabel, Hawk Warbler and Polyglot Warbler and many other species. In the afternoon we will look for the elusive Greek Partridge, for which we will take a moderate walk of about 3km along a path. Other species will be the Moorish Busardo and with luck we will have the possibility to see the White-backed Pico, spp. liffordi. When we are ready, an hour's drive will take us to the town of Mirkovo, where we will spend the night. Farewell dinner and early withdrawal since we will get up very soon the next day.

Day 8 - One hour transfer to the airport for departure.

Note: This is a bird watching trip in which if you want to photograph them you must bring at least one 300 mm and a stable tripod, bean bags can be loaned upon request in advance. In the lakes, a wide angle, as well as a zoom of 70-200 it would be very useful. We also do specific trips for nature photographers, ask us.
