Winter temperatures in this area of South-Eastern Europe are usually very cold but are usually combined with blue skies and bright sunrises.. We chose the month of February because at the end of winter the birds resume their activity and prepare for the feeding season. In addition, in the case of the Pelicans it is when their appearance is most striking and in the case of the Red-necked Goose it is the best opportunity to see them in Europe before they return to Siberia..

Thanks to its mild winters, the Black Sea coast is sought after by many birds, wintering here for thousands of individuals. Bulgaria is the best place to see several species in the same area and especially at this time of year. Out of all, the most notable is the spectacular Goose neck (Branta ruficollis). In January and February almost the entire world population of this bird is concentrated here (It is native to Asia and Africa, and is in danger of extinction). Other attractive species that winter here in large numbers are the Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus) and the frowning pelican (Pelecanus crispus).

Also at this time we have a good opportunity to see true rarities such as the Chinese Ansar face (Consider erythropus) and the spotted eagle (Aquila clanga). It is even possible to see specimens of Black-headed Gull (Ichthyaetus ichthyaetus).
