Where to find bike parks?
Currently in Spain a true passion for mountain biking is developing, which has great advantages such as, for example, that it makes the purchase of MTB bikes more affordable, accessories and repairs to the general public, fan clubs are formed, MTB culture increases, etc… but some drawbacks such as the overcrowding of recreation areas where you can do mountain biking.
The solution: travel to Bulgaria…, Maybe you had not considered it but why not make your weekend passion an opportunity to enjoy a different vacation in the company of your friends and getting to know another country?…. For this, Bulgaria offers unbeatable conditions, It has a series of "bike parks" that are circuits and trails specially enabled for cycling through forests and green areas of great beauty, They have areas prepared to make cyclists enjoy to the fullest, such as banks, jumps, wood bridges, roderas, rivers, etc….. In fact, in some of these bike parks European mountain bike championships have been held, the last one was in 2013 in the Bike Park of “Pamporovo”, you can find it on "youtube".
But you don't need to be a professional to enjoy these trails surrounded by nature, On the days that there are no official races, admission to these parks is free under a daily rate that is included in the price of our trips. In hikingeuropa.com we will pick you up at Sofia airport upon your arrival, we take you to the hotel together with your companions, We take you to the park and provide you with bicycles and other accessories so that you can enjoy your passion in an incomparable setting. In addition, from your arrival you will be accompanied by one of our guides / translators to make your stay and all the logistics as easy as possible..
The best of this proposal are the facilities and the surroundings of these parks, some are found in Spain but they are small, with repetitive paths and the landscape is semi-desert compared to the evergreen Bulgaria, after 1 now you're bored of seeing the same… Those from Bulgaria take advantage of the ski resort facilities, but from the thaw here, mountain biking is the king of sport. You leave the hotel, the MTB rental bikes that we provide are waiting for you at the door, at the station itself you take a telesilla in which you can load the bike and that will take you directly to the highest point of the circuit, once there the adventure begins, for example a downhill or descent at full speed that will make you get your adrenaline pumping like never before. At the station you meet other MTB fans from different countries but without having to wait for long lines or crowds and all in an atmosphere of friendship and unparalleled fun. You can see this video or others on youtube so you know what you are missing by not traveling to Bulgaria.
We recommend the bike park of “Borovets” that it is a ski resort in winter but that the rest of the year is available to cyclists. As you can imagine, the landscapes that surround it are of the alpine type and retain greenery and freshness even in summer..
Borovets bike park is the most famous in Bulgaria (although there are others like Pamporovo, Shambala, Sopot,…). It is reached after only 72 km from the capital: Sofia. It is situated on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains at an altitude of 1.350 meters. The station enjoys a privileged location right in front of Musala Peak (2.925 meters) which is the highest in all the Balkans. It is a recent park, of 2010, that has more than 20 km of route divided into 11 marked trails and a multitude of alternative trails:

The mountain bike modalities that can be done in this station are 3: cross country, downhill y free ride, for the profane I explain them briefly:
Cross country (XC): Routes that cross slopes and undulating paths with ascents and descents. Distance is usually a priority factor over technical difficulty.
"XC" bikes only have front suspension (hardtail) and its route goes from 60 a 100 mm. Weight usually ranges from 9 and 12 kilos depending on the quality. Lightness and comfort are sought.
Downhill (DH): It consists of making only descents. The fans along with their mountain bikes are taken with chair lifts or cable cars to the top or highest point of the route. From there they go down as fast as possible.
DH bikes are expressly designed for this purpose and have practically no other use. They obviously have double suspension and their length ranges from 170 and 250 mm. The weight of the bicycle can vary between 15 and 20 kg.
Free ride (FR): It involves descents, jumps, falls, technical zones, whether natural or man-made. It is what we here call enduro. Technically very demanding, this specialty tests the ability of the cyclist.
FR bikes have full suspension with a length ranging from 150 a 200 mm. These bicycles are designed to receive large impacts and their weight ranges between 13 and 18 kg. They are not designed to climb large slopes or do very long stages.
And here we leave you our article on the differences between bikes downhill (DH), cross country (XC), all mountain (trail), enduro and freeride.
In the case of Borovets the star track of this park is Downhill with 2,400 meters in length and 430 meters of descent (it passes from 1.780 a 1.350 altitude meters). In only 12 minutes the chairlift will take you and your mtb to the highest point. Once you go down with your bike to the station, You can take the chairlift again and repeat the route as many times as you want to improve your time or go down a different path thanks to the different path options that you have marked. In addition, the park also wants to host families and for this it has implemented a tour of 14 km accessible for all ages, including children. Take some 2 hours of traversing it through some of the station's most beautiful wooded landscapes. This is the general view of the base station and the path plan.
